Requirements October 1939 until June 1953

1. Shoot with bow and arrows a Junior American Round--30 arrows each 50, 40, and 30 yards--on a standard 48-inch target, and make a score of 250.

2. With a bow, arrow and string made by himself, shoot 125 yards, OR with a bow made by himself shoot 300 (under Requirement No. 1) for a Junior American round.

3. (a) Give the definition of: York, American and Junior American Rounds: also Team Shoot for Men, Team Shoot for Boys.  Know the requirements for entering a national or his local association tournament, and the events open to him.

(b) Explain the meaning of wand, clout, and flight shooting; roving.

(c) Explain the general rule for shooting in a tournament, as to number of arrows used, how scored, and safety rules

4. (a) Explain care of his bow, string and arrows.

(b) Splice a loop on the end of his bowstring; whip the string; and adjust the string with a bowman’s knot.

(c) Name at least four woods commonly used for bows; three woods for arrows.  Describe at least two common repairs for arrows.

(d) Explain:  cast; follow the string; weight of bow; fistmele; spine; matched arrows; footed arrows difference between flight, target and hunting arrows;  backed bow; reflexed bow.

5. Know something of the history of Archery, and the principal archers of the past and the present, and their achievements.

 

Requirements June 1953 until February 1960

1. Name and explain the archery safety rules.

2. Shooting requirements:

a. Shoot with bow and arrows a Junior American round on a standard 48’” target, and make a score of 250: 30 arrows at 50 yards; 30 arrows at 40 yards; 30 arrows at 30 yards.

OR

b. Shoot with bow and arrows a Chicago round on a standard 16” target, and make a score of 250:

30 arrows at 17 yards 2feet       50 yards at 48” target
30 arrows at 13 yards 1 foot      40 yards at 48” target
30 arrows at 10 yards                30 yards at 48” target

OR

c. Shoot with bow and arrows an official field archery round and make a score of 50.

3. Rounds and shooting rules:

a. Give the definition of the following: American round; Junior American round; The field rounds; Clout shoot.

b. Give the shooting rules used in target tournament. Explain how arrows are scored. OR Give the shooting rules used in field archery tournaments. Explain how arrows are scored.

4. General archery knowledge:

a. Explain proper care and how to store: The bow; bowstring; arrows.

b. Make a bowstring, whip the string, and adjust the bowstring with a bowman’s knot.

c. Explain the following terms: Cast; Weight of bow; Fistmele; Methods of aiming; Spine; Difference between target, field and hunting arrows.
