Pamphlets Used to Earn this Badge

Requirements September 1963 until June 1972

1. Do the following:

(a) Show how to read a schematic diagram.

(b) Draw a simple circuit using correct schematic symbols and label all components.  Circuit should include components such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, or tubes.

(c) Explain the purpose of the components in your circuit.

2. Do the following:

(a) Explain the proper method of soldering and unsoldering electronic parts.

(b) On a chassis or breadboard, wire the circuit that you drew for Requirement 1b.

(c) Explain to your counselor how to avoid heat damage to the components.

3. Explain ONE of the following two applications:

(a) Remote-control application:

Explain how you can use an electronic circuit for remote control. Suggested circuits:  use of an electric eye in opening doors; use of switch and relay with a transistor circuit to control the starting, coasting, and braking effects in a model train system; use of a transmitter to control the flight of a model plane; use of a simple audio oscillator to control a toy electronic organ.  Build the device using purchased parts or a kit.

(b) Electronic brain application:

Explain the binary system of numbers.  Make up and work out five problems in addition and subtraction and bring them to your counselor.  Convert binary numbers to decimal numbers.  Build a simple flip-flop circuit using either transistors or tubes.  Demonstrate the circuit for your counselor.

4. Discuss with your counselor the job opportunities in the field of electronics.
