1. Do the following:

(a) What are three of the more important decisions (any subject) you have made recently?
(b) What steps are used in the decision making  process?
(c) Talk with a farmer about the consequences of decision making in his farm or ranch operation.

2. Select four or more crop and livestock enterprises that are common in your area and classify each as high, medium, or low regarding (a) labor required, (b) equipment and machinery investment required, and (c) operating expenses required.

3. Contact your county agricultural agent, Soil Conservation Service office, or Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service office. Using information from one of these sources and your own resourcefulness:

(a) Draw a map of a specific farm or ranch; show the location of fences, buildings, drainage ways, rivers or streams, woods, and pond.
(b) Show on the map the size and present crop for each field.
(c) Show how you would change the layout of the farm or ranch to improve soil conservation, or to improve operating efficiency.

4. Do the following:

(a) Tell what kinds of records and accounts farmers keep. How are such records used in making farm or ranch management decisions?
(b) How would these records be used in making out an income tax report?

5. Develop a partial budget, showing income and expenses, for two different crop or livestock enterprises. OR develop a net worth statement for a specific farm or ranch in your area; tell why net worth statements are useful to farmers or ranchers.
