Requirements January 1952 until September 1970

1. Collect samples of at least five different kinds of leather: calfskin, cowhide, pigskin, etc. Point out the chief characteristics and best uses of each.

2. Make one or more articles of leather which involve the technique of: (a) preparation and transfer of a pattern; (b) cutting the leather; (c) punching holes; (d) tooling, embossing, stamping, carving or burning.

3. Submit evidence that you take proper care of your shoes and other leather wearing apparel.

4. Do two of these projects: (a) Learn (from observation if possible) the process of tanning, curing, and finishing leather. (b) Tan or cure the skin of a small animal. (c) Demonstrate proper care of leather goods and make minor repairs on a damaged suitcase, piece of harness, or other article. (d) Sole and heel a pair of shoes or boots. Keep a record of costs and time spent. (e) Plait or braid an article of leather or leather substitute - such as a whistle lanyard, belt, or dog leash. Make a terminal Turk's-head. (f) Find out what lifework opportunities there are in the leather industries. Choose one specific job in which you are interested and report on the qualifications you must have for the job and what the working conditions are.
