1. Explain the proper way to use the following hand tools: screw driver, ball-peen hammer, pliers, cold chisel, center punch, file, calipers, hacksaw, rule, combination square. Also these types of wrenches: open end, adjustable, monkey, pipe, box, and socket. Demonstrate to your counselor the use of any eight of the above tools.

2. Assemble or construct wooden or metal models of these: lever inclined plane, screw, wedge, wheel and axle, block and tackle, and gears.

3. Make and present a rough sketch showing the operation of: diesel engine, steam turbine, four-cycle gasoline engine. Explain how--in a factor or machine shop--the power is commonly transmitted to the machines.

4. Make and present a satisfactory sketch showing the construction of a drill press and a metalworking lathe. Explain three operations that can be performed on each.

5. Make a metal object from a plan or blueprint using a machine lathe and a drill press.

6. Visit a machine shop, trade school or factor; note the benchwork, power equipment, machine tools, and safety devices to protect workers; take notes and describe your visit. or If no such shop is available, submit a chart or outline showing at least five mechanical occupations and listing the work and training required for each.
