1. Sing or play a simple folk song, art song, or hymn selected by your counselor. (You should be able to read all the signs and terms of the score and to sing or play it on a standard musical instrument in an acceptable musical manner with respect to technique, phrasing, tone, dynamics and rhythm.)

2. Name the four general groups of musical instruments and briefly describe how tones are obtained from one example of each group.

3. Do two of the following:

(a) Attend a concert, recital, oratorio, opera, or other classical or semiclassical music performance, or listen to at least three hours of such musical programs on radio, television, or phonograph. Report on what compositions were heard, who their composers were, and who performed and conducted them. Know the story of any program music or opera included. Discuss your own impressions of the music with your counselor.

(b) Outline in your own words the development of music in the United States. Show that you are familiar with the lives and works of at least five of this country's better known composers and musical artists.

(c) Serve satisfactorily for at least six months as a members of a school, church, Scout unit, or other community musical organization, such as a band, orchestra, chamber group, drum and bugle corps, glee club, or choir. or Participate as a soloist in at least six public functions.

4. Do one of the following:

(a) Teach three songs to a group of Scouts or other persons and, using proper hand motions, lead them in singing the songs.

(b) Compose and write the score for a piece of music of at least twelve measures.

(c) Make a primitive musical instrument and learn to play satisfactorily on it.

(d) Catalogue properly your own or your family collection of at least twelve phonograph records. Show how to handle and store records correctly.
