Requirements June 1953 until January 1960

1. Submit at least sixteen black-and-white photographs, or thirty color transparencies, or a 100-foot reel of 16 mm. movie film, or a 50-foot reel of 8 mm. Picture taking must be done by yourself, and results must be acceptable to your counselor from the standpoint of selection of subject and background, composition, focus, exposure, light and shade, and tone quality or color harmony. Tell what types of camera, film, and filter were used for your pictures, and why.

2. Do one of the following:

(a) Develop your negatives and make your own prints of sixteen black-and-white still photographs taken by yourself. Tell what kind of film negative developer, paper, and paper developer you used and why you selected those materials.

(b) Submit a plan for a series of at least thirty color transparencies on some phase of Scouting, family, school, church, or community activity. Plan should call for a presentation of about four minutes and should include: (1) a "shooting" script (a written description of what the series will cover and how they will be photographed); (2) an outline of the commentary to accompany the slides, or a list of titles necessary for an effective presentation; (3) a list of equipment and properties required.

(c) Submit a plan for a complete how-to-do-it movie on some phase of Scouting, family, school, church or community activity. Plan should call for a running time of approximately four minutes (100 feet of 16 mm. film, 50 feet of 8 mm.) and should include: (1) a "shooting" script (a written description or plan of what the movie will cover and how it will be photographed); (2) an outline of the commentary to accompany the movie, or a list of titles necessary for an effective presentation; (3) a list of equipment and properties required.

3. Do one of the following:

(1) Enlarge to 8" x 10" and properly mount on 16" x 20" mounts at least two black-and-white pictures taken by yourself and exhibit them in a regular photography exhibit or at a Scout or Explorer meeting.

(b) Submit a series of at least ten black-and-white pictures that tell a how-to-do-it story.

(c) Prepare glossy prints of two of your photographs in suitable form, with captions to be submitted to a publication.

(d) Take the series of thirty color transparencies planned under 2b and present it to an audience.

(e) Take the movie planned under 2c, edit and title it, and present it to an audience.

(f) Demonstrate your ability to set up and put on an effective film presentation before a group, including operation of a standard 16 mm. sound projector. Show proper advance preparations covering local license or permit (if required), safety precautions, seating arrangements, choice of screen size and surface, electrical requirements, house lights, ventilation, care of film, and trouble shooting.

(g) Demonstrate your ability to set up and put on a presentation similar to 3f, but calling for operation of a slide or filmstrip projector with sound or narrator.

4. Investigate and report on the opportunities open to you for finding a career in some aspect of photography.
